Dodwell papers include PFC Dodwell's papers consist of a diary with interspersed notes from a wartime log book all describing in detail daily life in Stalag IIB, playing drums in the prisoner of war (POW) band, farm and forestry work in the Kommando units, performing concerts for the camp, contents of Red Cross boxes, efforts from the YMCA to obtain new instruments and books, prison library, use of cigarettes as money, medical problems with dysentery and sores, organization of the combine system and election of confidence man, day train or truck trips to play concerts for Kommando units, and the almost 3-month evacuation procedure. Also includes a supplement which has the itinerary of the evacuation trip; glossary of POW and German terms; content list of American Red Cross parcel; price list for trading with cigarettes; descriptions of a combine, kommando, and confidence man; explanations of German units; and a memoir of POW camp not covered by the diary. A program, DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE 1990, is included.

Harold W. Dodwell was a United States (U.S.) soldier and prisoner of war during WWII. Private First Class Harold W. Dodwell was captured during the invasion of Salerno, Sicily (September 11, 1943); transported to Stalag VIIA; and then, to Stalag IIB at Hammerstein in present day Poland where he remained until January 29, 1945. Dodwell was evacuated and stayed until April 12, 1945, traveling around northeastern Germany until being freed by elements of the 5th Armored Division and sent to Camp Luc...
